The live map

Who is on your site right now: the visitors of the last 30 minutes on a world map, and the latest events as they arrive. On every plan, in the dashboard of each site, web, store or SaaS.

What it shows

  • Visitors and page views of the last 30 minutes and, when there were sales, their revenue.
  • A point for each place with visitors: the centre of its city, rounded to about 1 km, never anyone's position. Hover a point to see its visitors and page views; zoom in and out, or fit the map to where the traffic is.
  • The latest events: each page view, event (a goal, a click, a download) and sale, newest first, with its page and its place. Six on the panel, twelve in full screen.
  • Each visitor in the list gets a made-up name and an emoji, from the same anonymous identifier that counts visitors: it tells one visitor reading three pages from three visitors. It changes every week with that identifier, and it is never a person's name.
  • Bots and the traffic you excluded are not there, as in the rest of the dashboard.

Sound and auto-rotate

  • Sound: a soft note with every new visit and a chime with every sale. Browsers only play sound after a click, so it starts off: the button turns it on.
  • Auto-rotate: the map glides slowly across the places with the most traffic.

Full screen, for a wall screen

  • Full screen (its button, or the M key) shows the map and twelve events, for a screen on the wall of an office or a shop.
  • While it is in full screen, the dashboard does not sign you out after 30 minutes without activity, as it otherwise does. A different tab of the same browser that does time out still signs out every tab, this one included.

How it stays up to date

  • The map arrives as a stream: SimpleData checks your site every 10 seconds and sends the dashboard what changed, without reloading anything.
  • If the stream cannot be used (a network or proxy that cuts it, too many dashboards open at once, an old browser), the dashboard asks every 10 seconds instead. You see the same figures either way.
  • A tab in the background lets go of its stream, and takes it up again when you come back to it.

Sites that keep the country only

  • If a site keeps the country only (Site settings → Geolocation), every point sits at the centre of its country, and the map says why. Visits recorded before keep their city in the database, but the map and its list show them by country too.
  • On any site, a few points can sit at the centre of their country: when neither Cloudflare nor MaxMind knows the city. The map marks them as country-level.

Who sees it

You, and the readers of your team (Pro) while your account is on Pro. The read-only share link does not show it.
